FFXIII to appear at GDC

FFXIII | January 24th, 2008 news header

The Game Developers Conference is a place where developers show off their latest tools and engines that power todays latest and greatest games. This year, Square-Enix will make an appearance at GDC, which takes place February 18th - 22th. This is an exciting time, because we might be able to get a glimpse at their engine that powers their latest Final Fantasy game, Final Fantasy XIII. This engine is called the White Engine, which was made specifically for the Playstation 3 console.

Stayed tuned to FFi for more information about this event and Square-Enix's presence at the event.

This is exciting news. I hope they reveal more information on the White Engine, and how much power of the PS3 they are tapping into using this engine.

Is there a list of other games that SE will run through the White Engine? Or will it just be the company's standard?

As far as I know, it's for the two main Fabula Nova Crystallis games, Final Fantasy XIII, and Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Then again, we really don't know if Versus will even use the White Engine. It could use the Unreal Engine 3 engine that Square-Enix acquired in, I believe, December 2006. I hope not, though, because I'm not a fan of the Unreal Engine. More information will be made available at GDC, though, I'm sure of it. Square-Enix should answer your question at the event. :)

But isn't the White Engine just a [heavy] modification of the Unreal Engine? Or was it completely produced by SE?

The White Engine is a completely new engine. They have built it from the ground up, and they are still building it. If it's a heavy modification of the Unreal Engine, that's news to me.

Either way, FFXIII and Versus look amazing. By the way, the pigtailed girl (referred to as "Nomchan", so far) is an intriguing character. She's relatively unique-looking compared to the other FFXIII and Versus characters.

Yes, both games do indeed look amazing. Nomchan is not her name, haha. I was staying up to date with the information about Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII on NeoGaf. It was in a thread that people were discussing the scans where two members joined together and decided to name her Nomchan. NeoGaf has this weird obsession with Nom, and chan in Japanese means something, and they decided to add it together to make a name for her. I remember reading those two members laughing at the news websites all over the internet who said that her name is Nomchan. So, as of right now, we don't know the pig-tailed hair girl's real name, or even a nickname. Well, Nomchan is gaining a lot of attention, haha, so I guess that will be her name to everyone who uses the internet.

NeoGaf is legendary--whatever they say becomes fact. :P
